The Site

The Plan thus far…
The site is marked on the ground. We’re going to see it today. It’s hard to imagine that the spray painted lines or sticks hammered in the ground will become the footprint of a cabin, our cabin. It will be a place of happiness, rest and renewal. The excavator decided that the dirt road is sufficient for his trucks to come down. Adrien said that if a truck should get stuck coming around the last curve, he can always tow it out with another truck. The main concern is for the cement truck. With a full basement being put in, there will be a lot of cement poured. Foundation dug. Cement poured.

However, before a basement hole is dug, it must be determined whether the water table is low enough to tolerate a lower level. We want the option of a basement for future play room, bed room, bomb shelter, what ever we need it for! But we do not want a swimming pool in the basement. As for me, I dig the excitement of not knowing exactly what we’ll get. There is always a surprise. Although there is a plan, we could have some interesting deviations…

Something interesting about Adrien is that his mother is a school psychologist and his father is a psychologist. He was raised as a Unitarian Universalist. How could anyone else be a better choice for us? We interviewed four builders, and liked them all. But two of the four are subdivision type home builders, and we don’t want that look. We loved the third choice, Sam, but he seemed unorganized. Adrien came so highly recommended by Tanner, our neighbor that we had to interview him. Once we met, we were impressed with his knowledge of the building process, the materials, and the sub contracting jobs that he needs to hire for the cabin. As I said before, his references were so glowing, they were slightly suspect. But that is just my suspecting nature. He certainly knows what he is doing.

Today we will inspect the stakes, and the marks on the ground. We’ll lie down on the grass and imagine where the couch will be, the beds, and the kitchen table. And I’ll imagine where the toilet will be, the one most important transformation of this property to civilization! I know we won’t regret it.
